Signs of Bed Bugs

Don’t Leave Home With Them

Going on vacation this summer? Be sure not to bring home any buggy souvenirs. Learn how to spot the signs of bed bugs and what to do if you find them.

Signs of Bed Bugs

From cruise ships to country cottages, bed bugs have been found around the world infesting areas where you sleep. While they used to be seen as a sign of an unkempt room, these tiny pests have now been known to take up residence anywhere they can find food—including fancier accommodations.

These small, flat insects are reddish-brown, feed on blood, and can live for months without a meal. During the day, they hide in and around beds—living up to their name—giving them a shorter commute to work at night. This is why you want to do an initial sweep of the nightstand, headboard, sheets, and mattress for some telltale signs:

  • Rust-colored spots (bug fecal matter)
  • Musty odor
  • Exoskeletons (bed bugs molt)
  • Actual bug

If you don’t see any signs, but still end up finding tiny bite marks on your body, it may be a good idea to check the perimeter again. Bed bug bites affect people differently, just as mosquito bites, but any severe reaction should be looked into by a doctor.

How Did They Get Here?

Bed bugs are expert hiders. Since they’re small, it’s easy to wait in cracks and crevices until their hosts are asleep. These bugs are also excellent travelers. They spread by catching a ride in the folds of your clothes and luggage. Since they can go long periods without a meal, layovers are no problem. Once they settle into a new location, they’re good to go again . This is why it’s important to be aware of their possible presence in any new place and be careful not let them tag along to your next destination.

Bed Bug Prevention & Treatment

The easiest way to prevent bed bugs is to inspect your surroundings for any signs of an infestation. If found, contact your host or a professional pest control company to treat the area with insecticide. Try to avoid scratching the bites and treat them with an over-the-counter antiseptic.

If you suspect bed bugs are now vacationing in your home, contact Cardinal Pest for an inspection and treatment options.
